Few actors were on top of their game as long as Burt Lancaster, as this compilation of films from four decades demonstrates. In 1950, he revitalized the Hollywood swashbuckler in The Flame and the Arrow, which earned Oscar nominations for its cinematography and Max Steiner's rousing musical score. Lancaster's hawkish general attempts to overthrow a pacifist president (Fredric March) in John Frankenheimer's suspense classic Seven Days in May (1964), Oscar nominated for its art direction and Edmond O'Brien's performance. The provocative Executive Action (1973) reexamines the assassination of JFK. And the modern fairy tale Local Hero (1983) won numerous critics' awards for writer/director Bill Forsyth.
