Written by Susan Minot and Michael Cunningham, from Minot's 1998 novel of the same name, Evening (2007) boasts a powerhouse cast. Vanessa Redgrave plays Ann Grant Lord, at the end of her life and surrounded by her daughters (Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson, Redgrave's daughter) and best friend Lila (Meryl Streep). The younger women become concerned for their mother's mental state when she begins talking about people they've never heard of, but the film reveals in flashback their part in a weekend in Rhode Island that was a turning point for young Ann and Lila (Claire Danes and Mamie Gummer, Streep's daughter). Glenn Close, Patrick Wilson, Hugh Dancy, and Eileen Atkins are also featured.
