This small yet strikingly beautiful album showcases delicate, hand-colored copper engravings of birds, created by Georges-Louis Leclerc, the Compte de Buffon (1707–88), for his masterpiece Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière. The book contains more than 350 color reproductions of Leclerc's art, depicting the vibrant hues of the birds' feathers, the varying length of their wings, and their wide-eyed expressions as they stand perched and alert. The birds' English and Latin names are given in the table of contents, while Leclerc's brief descriptions are translated in English for the index. The DVD-ROM includes both JPEG and PNG images of the birds, to be used by readers at their discretion.
