Here British major P.R. "Pat" Reid revisits the German castle-prison he made famous in his classic 1952 escape memoir The Colditz Story and its sequel The Latter Days, incorporating all of the thrilling stories in those books as well as new firsthand accounts by the prison's German chaplain Ellison Pratt. Colditz was said to be an inescapable fortress, where the Nazis sent those who persisted in getting out of such camps as Stalag Luft III (made famous in The Great Escape). And yet, during the four years the castle was used as a prison, more than 300 men did escape, trying everything from tunneling to hiding in rubbish sacks, disguising themselves as Germans and even leaping acrobatically from the castle walls.
