In 1936 Henry "Chips" Channon—an American expatriate who had recently been elected to Parliament—gave a lavish dinner for King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson at his house in Belgrave Square. The British aristocracy, impoverished by death duties, agricultural collapse, and higher taxation, and morally shattered by the Great War, could only look on as blinis, caviar, sole, and beef were served with precision by Chips's staff, in a vivid demonstration of just how far the Americans had percolated high society. As Lady Londonderry observed, it seemed as if London was "being run by an American syndicate." Charles Jennings' book is a lively mix of anecdote and social history, bringing to life the most striking characters in British high society at a time of dramatic social upheaval. "My copy of Them and Us is flagged with far more wonderful passages than this review can accommodate.... Jennings draws on sources such as Evelyn Waugh and Edith Wharton; his prose often rises to the wit of the former and the elegance of the latter."—Financial Times
