|
|
Of the nearly half dozen film adaptations of Johanna Spyri's beloved novel, this 2005 version may be the most faithful to the author's vision and most picturesque for its alpine scenery. Dublin-born Emma Bolger stars as the orphan abandoned by her aunt (Pauline McLynn) to live with her embittered grandfather (Max von Sydow) deep in the Swiss Alps. Through her indomitable spirit she eventually opens his heart to love; befriends Peter (Sam Friend), a lonely neighbor boy who herds her grandfather's goats; and gives crippled rich girl Clara (Jessica Claridge) the courage to try to walk.
