Directed by Caroline Thompson, this 1994 version of Anna Sewell's classic story about the ebony horse and the various owners whose lives he transforms is the most faithful of the book's several screenings. Told from the point of view of the horse (played by Docs Keepin' Time and voiced by Alan Cumming), the film chronicles the Dickensian life of Black Beauty from his idyllic birth through the tragic events that lead him to caretakers both kindly and harsh, from Farmer Grey (Sean Bean) and young groom Joe Green (Andrew Knott) to sweet-natured cabbie Jerry Barker (David Thewlis).
