Notable not only for the lovable giraffe heroine of the title, but also for the first appearance of Curious George, this first children's book by Hans and Margret Rey, for readers up to 8, was inspired when Jacques Schiffrin spotted Hans's drawing of a giraffe in a French magazine in 1938 and thought it would make a wonderful children's book character. The lonely giraffe's life is turned around one day when she spots a family of monkeys stranded on the other side of a river gorge, and makes herself into a bridge for them to cross. Though credited at first to H.A. (Hans Augusto) Rey alone, this book and all of the original seven Curious George books were full collaborations between Rey (who did much of the illustrating) and his wife Margret (who did much of the writing), as explained in a charming illustrated biography of the Reys here by Louise Borden.
