This favorite Curious George tale for readers up to 7, originally published in 1947, sees the little monkey make an escape from the zoo and then take to the city streets, where he gets into plenty of mischief, from helping himself to a big pot of spaghetti to painting an apartment to look like the jungle he once lived in. But when George ends up in the hospital with a broken leg, his friend the man in the yellow hat finally finds him and gives him a new job—making a movie about himself. Though credited at first to H.A. (Hans Augusto) Rey alone, all of the original seven Curious George books—as well as his first appearance, in 1939, in Cecily G. and the 9 Monkeys—were full collaborations between Rey (who did much of the illustrating) and his wife Margret (who did much of the writing).
