Founded in 1876, the Centennial State is much older in American history, from its appearance on Vincenzo Coronelli's 1688 map as an uncharted frontier of "New Mexico." Here too is a 1907 map from Colorado Land Headquarters, showing the newly surveyed plots outside of Denver that typify the sprawling settlement of the state, while a "Hysterical Map" of Rocky Mountain National Park, from 1951, promises tourists a place of safe, family fun in a wilderness subdued. Beautifully illustrated with more than 50 captioned color reproductions of antique maps, surveys, battle plans, bird's-eye views, and other regional images, this is history with an eye to the land and how we used it, reflecting the culture and sensibilities of the state and its residents through time.
