Acclaimed by Théophile Gautier as "the Michelangelo of the menagerie," Antoine-Louis Barye (1795–1875) was best known as an anamalier—an artist specializing in animal sculpture—yet Barye was also a master of the human form, drawing inspiration from classical mythology, poetry, and French history. He produced some of the most technically experimental and controversial sculptures of the 19th century, often featuring riders on horseback, and also pioneered mass production editions of bronzes for the rapidly expanding middle-class market. Illustrated with color photos and reproductions, this catalog offers a wide survey of Barye's works, from the collection of the Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art, spotlighting 80 bronze pieces and 35 drawings and paintings, and cataloging 36 sketches in black and white. In addition to supplemental figures for many of the works described, the book includes an additional 77 color and black and white figures illustrating seven essays and four appendices.
