The English village of Fairacre may appear idyllically peaceful to passersby, but when a rumor emerges—that the Fairacre School is to be closed and the children bused to nearby Beech Green—the village is up in arms at once. The schoolmistress, Miss Read, suffers agonizing indecision at the prospect, and her situtation is made worse when her infants' room teacher decides to leave and the short-tempered Mrs. Pringle becomes more contrary than ever. The real Miss Read—Dora Jessie Saint, herself a teacher for many years—kept the name of her narrator as a pen name. Her wry chronicles of the neighboring towns of Thrush Green and Fairacre in the Cotswolds district of England, begun in the 1950s and continued for 40 years, take readers to a bygone world of charming eccentrics and stalwart characters. When troubles arise they are handled with a combination of manners, a bit of the stiff upper lip, and the occasional good-natured compromise. "Miss Read has three great gifts—an unerring intuition about human frailty, a healthy irony, and, surprisingly, an almost beery sense of humor. As a result, her villages, the rush of the sun and snow through venerable elms, and the children themselves all miraculously manage to blend into a charming and lasting whole."—The New Yorker
