Description
The former guitarist with the blues-rock band NRBQ, Al Anderson is a heck of a picker. (Musician magazine placed him in the Top 100 guitarists of the 20th century.) This solo album touches on blues, rockabilly, country, and Western swing, with Anderson's own versions of hits he helped write for Jimmy Buffett and Martina McBride ("Trip Around the Sun"), a song he wrote with Delbert McClinton ("Blues About You, Baby"), and ballads like "Love, Make a Fool of Me." Guest vocalists include Sharon Vaughn on "Do Nothing Day" and Tia Sillers on "What's a Thousand Miles?"

"He mixes the moods nicely, crooning the pretty ballad 'Better Word for Love' one moment and rocking out with the knee-slapping hoedown of 'Blues About You, Baby' the next. 'Right on Time' ranks among the standout tracks—imagine the Eagles doing the theme song for the NBC series Ed…. Anderson channels Randy Newman on the Dixieland-country blend of 'Let's Get Away for the Weekend,' and the album's closer, 'Two Survivors,' is a torch song in the spirit of George Michael's 'Kissing a Fool.'… After Hours will get under your skin, and you'll find yourself humming its melodies for days."—Jazz Times
