Description
|

|
|
Anjelica Huston won Best Actress honors from the LA and National Society of Film Critics in this underappreciated 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, directed by maverick filmmaker Nicolas Roeg. The story follows recently orphaned nine-year-old Luke (Jasen Fisher), whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The coven's Grand High Witch (Huston) intends to turn all the children of England into mice, and Luke becomes her first victim, courtesy of Jim Henson's animatronic puppetry. Aided by an outstanding cast (Brenda Blethyn, Rowan Atkinson, and Jane Horrocks), young Luke attempts to foil the coven and regain his human identity.
