The last of Astaire and Rogers' nine cinematic pairings, this 1939 effort is an affectionate salute to Vernon and Irene Castle, the legendary ballroom dancers of the pre-WWI era. Vernon, a small-time vaudeville comedian, meets and marries Irene; together they become not just a sensational dancing duo, but the essence of prewar style. In a departure from their usual plot-driven dances, Astaire and Rogers here perform a pastiche of dances the Castles made famous: foxtrot, polka, and tango. The soundtrack is filled with such period tunes as "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" and "Waiting for the Robert E. Lee."
