Dennis Potter condenses his own celebrated TV miniseries classic for the big screen in this 2008 production which is equal parts hospital drama, film noir, psychological thriller, and surreal musical. Languishing in a hospital with an immobilizing case of skin-rotting psoriasis, pulp novelist Dan Dark (Robert Downey Jr.) escapes into his own vivid imagination, assuming the persona of a hardboiled Bogartesque detective and dance-band singer living in 1950s Los Angeles. Robin Wright Penn plays his cheating wife and a heavily made-up Mel Gibson is barely recognizable as Dark's condescending physician.
