Highlights include Randy turning the oven up too high and setting fire to the playhouse; a heat wave that melts Pee-wee's crayons; a visit from Pee-wee's pen pal, Oki Doki, from Japan; a camp-out in which everyone rides horses, roasts wieners, and sleeps under the stars; and the final episode in which Pee-wee puts a "for sale" sign in the playhouse window. As the show's eponymous man-child host, creator and star Paul Reubens reinvented children's TV programming in the 1980s by melding the innocence of early TV shows like Howdy Doody with the surreal visual style of music videos. It was the rare kids show that encouraged creativity and individualism—and screaming (whenever the "secret word" was spoken). Over its five-season run (1987–91), the show collected 22 Emmy Awards, won the Television Critics Award for Outstanding Children's Program in 1987, and is ranked in the top ten of TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever.
