|
Director Darnell Martin's 2008 biopic chronicles the rise of Leonard Chess's (Adrien Brody) Chess Records and its legendary roster of recording artists including Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Chuck Berry (Mos Def), Etta James (Beyoncé Knowles), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Howlin' Wolf (Eamonn Walker), and Willie Dixon (Cedric the Entertainer), who narrates the film. The movie's title refers to Chess's practice of paying his stars with luxury automobiles. A compilation soundtrack of classic blues, R&B, and early rock hits earned a Grammy nomination, as well as Grammy and Golden Globe nominations for the original song "Once in a Lifetime."
