|
|
The black Stetson worn by protagonist Virgil Cole is just one of the many hats—producer, director, co-screenwriter, star—worn by Ed Harris in this satisfying 2008 Western. As a gun-slinging marshal for hire, Harris rides into the New Mexico town of the title, along with best friend and sidekick Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen), tasked with bringing to justice the rapacious rancher Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) responsible for the previous marshal's death. A piano-playing coquette (Renée Zellweger) makes Cole's job a little harder, if more rewarding in the end. The movie took Best Film honors at the Boston Film Festival, as well as a screenwriting award for Harris and Robert Knott's adaptation of a Robert B. Parker novel.
