Sarah Vaughan was of the most staggeringly gifted singers who ever lived, regardless of genre. She can be appreciated anew in this career-spanning set, which appends many bonus tracks to the original LPs. The 1949–1952 sessions that produced After Hours With Sarah Vaughan backed Vaughan's sumptuous voice with strings on "Just Friends," "I Cried for You," "Street of Dreams," "Black Coffee," and other standards. Sarah Vaughan in Hi-Fi features Miles Davis, in one of the few times he accompanied a singer. At the Hollywood Bowl in 1982, Gershwin Live! paired Vaughan—still in peak vocal condition—with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas in a program that included "The Man I Love," "Summertime," "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and a Porgy and Bess medley. (Not surprisingly, Vaughan won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.) Her last complete album, Brazilian Romance shows how simpatico she was with the bossa nova style, with gorgeous renditions of "So Many Stars," "Photograph," "Love and Passion," "Nothing Will Be as It Was," and more.
