Like her acting abilities, Marilyn Monroe's singing chops have often been given short shrift. But jazz saxophonist Harry Allen, who appeared in a Monroe tribute with singer Rebecca Kilgore at Feinstein's, told the New York Times that "today she'd be considered one of the best singers around." This collection features assorted musical moments from Monroe's films as well as a USO appearance and the famous "Happy Birthday" performance for JFK. Songs include "A Fine Romance," "You'd Be Surprised," "Every Baby Needs A Da-da-Daddy," "Down in the Meadow," "A Little Girl From Little Rock," "Bye, Bye, Baby," "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," "How to Marry a Millionaire," "That Old Black Magic," and "Some Like It Hot." "It's absolutely compelling the way she inhabits the material. It's hard to put into words. It's very mysterious. Some people sing a song, and it's pretty, but you never want to listen to it again. Marilyn just bears repeated listening."—Rebecca Kilgore "She had the same problem as Fred Astaire. They were both wonderful singers, but you don't think of them as singers. So much of Monroe is the way she sells the song. You expect her to be second rate, but she never is."—jazz critic Gary Giddins
