Bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe characterized the genre as "Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin.' It's Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It's blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound." In bluegrass, as in jazz, the instruments often take turns improvising on the melody, with the others accompanying; this is especially prominent in rapid-fire tunes called "breakdowns." (In "old-time music," all of the instruments play the melody together or one carries the lead throughout.) Songs include "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms," "Smoky Mountain Rag," "The Weeping Willow," "Curly's Breakdown," "Nine-Pound Hammer," "John Henry," "Worried Man Blues," "Red Wing," and more. "Features 40 songs from the 50's and 60's, many of which have never appeared on CD before. This label-specific compilation may not feature a wide breadth of artists (Ernie & Mack, J.E. Mainer, Hylo Brown and Roy Ross make up the bulk of it), but it's hard to argue with the quality and authenticity of the performances."—All Music Guide
