This is the first in a brand new CD series from National Public Radio. Musical daughters of legends like Ella, Sarah, and Anita, these 13 contemporary artists all bring singular gifts to a genre that, thanks in part to them, continues to flourish and remain relevant in a world of staggering musical multiplicity. Seductive webs of song are spun by Diana Krall (with Tom Waits’ "Temptation"), Melody Gardot (her own "Worrisome Heart"), and Lizz Wright ("A Taste of Honey"). Tierney Sutton ("Happy Days Are Here Again") and Jane Monheit ("Over the Rainbow") imbue old standards with new patinas. Patricia Barber is spellbinding in "Narcissus," from her song cycle based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Karrin Allyson’s nod to the late Blossom Dearie with "Bye, Bye, Country Boy" is particularly lovely. Eliane Elias exhibits her keyboard prowess as well as her vocal agility with Bob Marley’s "Jammin'," while Ledisi shows what jazz improvisation is all about in "'Round Midnight." In the last track, Catherine Russell takes us back to where it all began, with an ultra-raunchy blues ("Kitchen Man").
