Description
"She cannot read music but when she starts to sing, people listen as if they were listening to Caruso." That's how composer Kurt Weill described his wife's artistry. Lotte Lenya's unique charisma and unmistakable husky timbre helped the Brecht/Weill songs achieve both popularity and immortality. These historic and rare recordings include Lenya's 1930/1929 accounts of her signature songs "Pirate Jenny" (from The Threepenny Opera) and "Surabaya-Johnny" (from Happy End). Next are 1932 recordings with orchestra of "Alabama Song," "Make Your Own Bed," and a medley—all from The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Weill accompanies Lenya on the next group of six songs: "Lost in the Stars" and "Lover Man" (with texts by Maxwell Anderson), "J'attends un navire," "Complainte de la Seine," "Surabaya-Johnny," and "Wie man sich bettet/Make your own bed." He was the pianist again in 1943, for "Ballad of the Soldier's Wife" and "How Much Longer"—which the couple recorded for short-wave transmissions to Germany from exile in America. A 1956 reprise of "Alabama Song" and "Make Your Own Bed" is followed by "Pride" and "Lust" from The Seven Deadly Sins (of the Petty Bourgeoise)—all backed by the NDR Orchestra.
