Description
Real-life harmonizing sisters from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Laura and Lydia Rogers have been likened to female reincarnations of the Everly Brothers (they even cover their "Lonely Island"). Growing up in a church with no musical instruments, they learned how to harmonize and to sing a cappella. Produced by T Bone Burnett, their second album—a mix of country, folk, blues, and rockabilly—has a timeless sound evoking a bone-deep blend of melancholy and bliss. A lyric from the title track goes "Mama, put your needle down. How did you feel when you were young?" Along with their own originals (e.g., the murder ballad "Luka" and the gospel song "River Jordan"), the two perform the powerful "Dirty Lie," drawn from a demo of an unfinished Dylan song to which they added lyrics.

"The many charms of Lydia and Laura Rogers [range] from salty country kiss-offs like 'Good Luck, Good Night, Goodbye' to the shiver-inducing blood harmonies of the dark-hued ballad 'Bad Habit’."—Boston Globe

"The sisters have mastered the art of looking backward and forward at the same time. Their love songs often explore the power struggle in romantic relationships. Sometimes they keep the upper hand, sometimes they don't. But from their lips, even forlorn acquiescence sounds more like ruminating in a Hawaiian paradise than a bad breakup."—NPR
