Description
Called by The New York Times "a soulful, generous improviser … full of playful ideas" and dubbed by the Village Voice "the best fiddler in New York," singer, violinist, composer, and arranger Jenny Scheinman has been one of the top violinists in the Downbeat Critics poll for over a decade. All About Jazz called her 2012 release, Mischief & Mayhem, "a near-flawless package of musical craftsmanship." Her eighth studio album, The Littlest Prisoner, is her most revealing. The lyrics are powerful, cranky, and suffused with dark humor, and many of the tracks are love songs with unusual perspectives. The words of the title song are from a pregnant inmate to her unborn child; "Sacrifice" likens the journey of marriage to the Underground Railroad; "My Old Man" refigures an old-time murder ballad from the perspective of a battered woman; and "Houston" was conceived looking out a plane window at the wreckage of a hurricane. The three instrumentals ("Thirteen Days," "Deborah's Waltz," and "Bent Nail") are little country-dances.

"Scheinman's high-lonesome fiddle is a perfect fit for guitarist Bill Frisell … [it] hovers between jazz and back-porch music."—NPR's Fresh Air

"There is an emotional element to her playing that makes her music deeply satisfying."—Wall Street Journal

"Scheinman [has] a distinctive vision of American music, suffused with plainspoken beauty and fortified all at once by country, gospel and melting-pot folk, along with jazz and the blues."—NY Times
