Description
The 17th solo album from this innovative banjoist, Great Big World taps into many strains of roots music, from Woody Guthrie's "Do Re Mi" to Stephen Foster's "Angelina Baker" (sung by Michael Daves and Aoife O'Donovan) to the scintillating instrumentals "Swag Bag Rag," "The Danny Thomas," "Ocracoke Lullabye," "Promontory Point" (featuring Steve Martin), and the playfully ambitious "Single String Medley" (five new tunes, each written for a different banjo string). The western epic "Wild Bill Hickok" has lead vocals from Ramblin' Jack Elliott and narration by actor John Goodman. "Say Goodbye (for KM)" is a fond tribute to the late Kate McGarrigle, while the haunting "Lost" is graced by strings, woodwinds, and Abigail Washburn's affecting lead vocal. The wistful "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight" is a song by Johnny Bond, taken from a bootleg tape of a live Bill Monroe performance. On "Joy," Catherine Russell's soulful vocal breathes vibrant life into a lyric with verses from Buddhist, Christian, and Jewish texts.

"A 5-string magnifico…. From the start, it was clear that Tony was merging the roll style pioneered by Earl Scruggs, the single-string, almost guitaristic style of Don Reno, and the melodic, fiddlish approach developed by Bill Keith and Bobby Thompson, to take the banjo into new territory."—Bluegrass Today
