These instrumental works by the composer of the operas La gioconda and I promessi sposi include the Fantasy on Motifs from "La Traviata" for Trumpet and Orchestra; Trumpet Concertos, Opp. 123 and 198; a Euphonium Concerto; and Gran Capriccio for Oboe and Orchestra.

"The concerti sound like overtures to Rossini and Donizetti operas with extended virtuoso solos…. The op. 198 Trumpet Concerto is a bright, tuneful Rossini-like piece…. By contrast, the op. 80 Gran Capriccio, as befits its instrument, is cast in modes that are alternately more elegiac, pensive, and dance-like; both it and the op. 123 Trumpet Concerto are more Verdian-sounding in spots. The op. 155 Euphonium Concerto takes full advantage of the instrument's more mellow sound to be more ingratiating than brilliant, though like the op. 198 Trumpet Concerto it ends in flurries of cascading runs that demand virtuosic tonguing from the soloists."—Fanfare

"The music itself is all appealingly wrought and displays an almost extravagant level of melodic fecundity…. The broad, ornamented lyric lines are straight out of bel canto, while elsewhere there's a rhythmic snap … that's more nearly akin to early-to-middle Verdi…. The soloists are all excellent. Giuliano Sommerhalder's clear, open tone transcends the stereotype of the virtuoso trumpeter. He shapes the ornamental bits and the cantabiles alike with a natural-sounding flexibility…. He projects each note with a pillowy, unpressed tone, even in staccatos. The rapid-fire writing in the concluding portion of Op. 123 dazzles, as does the row of perfect trills that follows. He phrases that tenor melody in the Traviata fantasy with a 'vocal' sensitivity."—Musicweb International
