Description
Back in the 1960s and 70s, Top 40 radio played an amazing amalgam of styles, from R&B and hard rock to singer/songwriter folk. Jukeboxes in clubs we remember—such as "Jack's à Go Go Off Broadway Lounge" in Columbus, Ohio—were crammed with counterculture, good times, protest, country, and rock music (as well as love songs), and most everybody sang along. Focusing on many of the significant songwriters who emerged during this era, this collection includes such insouciant, feel-good ditties as "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma" by Melanie, "Daydream" by the Lovin' Spoonful, and the original version of "Friends" by Buzzy Linhart (later picked up by Bette Midler); novelty hits like Loudon Wainwright III's "Dead Skunk"; eerie, iconic tunes like "Season of the Witch" by Donovan and "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed; much-covered country-rockers like "Pancho and Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt and "City of New Orleans" by Steve Goodman; gorgeous, heartfelt ballads like the Jefferson Airplane's "Today" and Janis Ian's "At Seventeen"; rousing anthems including "Wasn't Born to Follow" by the Byrds, "Euphoria" by the Youngbloods, "Run for the Roses" by Dan Fogelberg, and "Hail Hail Rock 'n' Roll" by Garland Jeffreys; and poignant, image-rich songs like "Please Come to Boston" by Dave Loggins and "Blue River" by Eric Andersen.
