Both Grammy-winning vocalists, Irish singer Susan McKeown and Lorin Sklamberg (lead singer and accordionist with the Klezmatics) have a beautiful rapport as they intertwine two traditions, harmonizing in Yiddish, Gaelic, and English. "One of the selections here, 'Prayer for the Dead,' is actually a mini-suite that groups together three pieces on the theme of death: the Irish anti-war song 'Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye,' a Yiddish lament (based on a Ukrainian song from World War I) … and a dirge written in Latin by an 11th-century Irish poet … [which] reminds me of Steeleye Span's version of 'Gaudete'."—Sing Out! "Many songs are overtly klezmer or overtly Irish (there is an ancient chant to St. Bridget). But I prefer the more complex hybrids. 'Heart's Blood' is a Scottish and Yiddish treatment of a German ballad, sweet and sour in that peculiar German way."—Buffalo News
