This epic 1975 film, directed by John Milius, is based on a historical incident from 1904 in which a Berber chieftain (Sean Connery) kidnaps an American widow (Candice Bergen) and her children to incite Arab tribesmen against the encroachment of imperial Western powers. The kidnapping ignited a chain of events that led President Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Keith) to wield the big stick of American gunboat diplomacy as Connery and Bergen's characters match wits and gain a mutual admiration. The movie received two Oscar nominations for Best Sound and Best Musical Score.
