Recreating their roles from Robert Sherwood's Broadway play, Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart star in this 1936 film, which marked Bogart's breakout success in Hollywood. Bette Davis also stars as young Gabrielle "Gabby" Maple, a waitress in a lonely diner in Arizona's Petrified Forest. Burning to travel to France and become a painter, Gabby is captivated by Alan Squier (Howard), a British intellectual tired of life, who has hiked to the diner on his way to the Pacific. When gangster Duke Mantee (Bogart) shows up, followed by the law, the diner's patrons are held hostage, and the true qualities of the various characters are revealed in the standoff.
