Nominated for three BAFTA Film Awards (art direction, editing, and Harold Pinter's screenplay), this 1966 adaptation of Adam Hall's spy thriller The Berlin Memorandum pits an American secret agent (George Segal) against a neo-Nazi group operating in 1960s Berlin.

"The film stands out from most of its contemporaries for its dreamlike, ritualistic, almost fairytale atmosphere. This quality is particularly apparent when one contrasts the child-like simplicity of its plot with the ambiguity and complexity of its characters, which always appear to be speaking in code. This derives largely from the cryptic dialogue by Harold Pinter and the stylish imagery supplied by director Michael Anderson and cinematographer Erwin Hillier."—Screen Online, British Film Institute

"While The Quiller Memorandum is noteworthy for strong performances by Alec Guinness, Max von Sydow (who is appropriately menacing as Oktober) and the beautiful Austrian newcomer Senta Berger, from today's standpoint the most interesting aspect of the film is unquestionably its screenplay by the British playwright Harold Pinter, winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Literature…. Its dry, oddly sardonic tone sets it apart from both the James Bond–type sex-and-gadget thrillers and the more somber, 'adult' spy dramas such as Martin Ritt's The Spy Who Came in from the Cold."—James Steffen, Turner Classic Movies
