Description
The first of these seven MGM productions, 1935's A Night at the Opera, is one of cinema's greatest comedies. That smash hit was soon followed by A Day at the Races (1937), Room Service (1938), At the Circus (1939), Go West (1940), The Big Store (1941), and A Night in Casablanca (1946), in which the foursome continued to purvey their patented brand of madcap mayhem, to the delight of audiences forevermore. The brothers were from a family of show people, and initially their musical talent was encouraged; Harpo played six different instruments, being particularly devoted to the harp, Chico was a fine pianist, Groucho a guitarist and singer, and Zeppo a vocalist. Beginning in vaudeville, the act evolved from singing with comedy to comedy with music, and thanks to their stellar physical and verbal skills, a legendary troupe of comedic anarchists was immortalized on film.
