Description
Born Margarita Cansino, the daughter of Spanish and Irish parents, Columbia's glamorous redhead Rita Hayworth worked from a young age as a professional dancer, and her expertise in this regard is evident in many of these films. In Cover Girl (1944) she glides with Gene Kelly to the music of Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern; little wonder it won the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture! As Gilda (1946) she performs "Put the Blame on Mame" in a Buenos Aires nightclub—hands down one of the most erotic song and dance numbers in the history of Hollywood. Hayworth is radiant as an American showgirl in wartime London in the gorgeous Technicolor musical Tonight and Every Night, a 1945 tribute to those who endured the nightly bombing raids that strafed the city; it won Oscars for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture and for Best Song—Jule Stein and Sammy Cahn's "Anywhere.") And in 1953 she vamped it up and showed her dramatic chops in Salome and Miss Sadie Thompson, respectively.
