Description
This 18-song set is a visual and aural tribute to one of the most elegant trailblazers in history, a gifted jazz pianist and a singer whose smooth, sensuous vocals bridged a postwar America's changing tastes. Born on St. Patrick's Day in 1919, Nathaniel Adams Coles formed his own group while in his teens and came up with his royal moniker himself. By 1950, he was the most successful African-American recording artist of his time, selling more than 50 million records. The first four songs—"Route 66," "Sweet Lorraine," "Calypso Blues," and "Nature Boy"—spotlight the Nat Cole Trio, culminating in his first million-selling hit. "Opus One," performed with the Mills Brothers, is a super-swinging, trombone-riffing delight. Cole's ever-hip trio mates—Oscar Moore on guitar and Wesley Prince on bass—return for a very hip "Got a Penny, Benny?" and Johnny Mercer stops by to duet on "Save the Bones for Henry Jones." Cole's balladry comes to the fore with "Autumn Leaves," "Mona Lisa," and "When I Fall in Love," while his jazz chops get a workout with "Tenderly" (with the Oscar Peterson Trio) and "Stompin' at the Savoy"—where he's joined by Peterson again and no fewer than three horn legends: Stan Getz, Roy Eldridge, and Coleman Hawkins. Other tunes include "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Shine On Harvest Moon," "Little Girl," and "So Long, My Love."
