This five-disc collection includes all 23 of Pee-wee's first- and second-season adventures (including two unaired episodes) with his puppet pals Chairry, Conky the Robot, and Pterry. Here too are such offbeat human performers as the late Phil Hartman (who played Captain Carl and served as one of the show's writers), Laurence Fishburne (Cowboy Curtis), Natasha Lyonne (the precocious Opal), William "Blacula" Marshall as the King of Cartoons (Marshall replaced Gilbert Lewis, who reigned as the King from 1986–87), Shirley Stoler from The Honeymoon Killers as Mrs. Steve, and Law and Order's S. Epartha Merkerson as Reba the Mail Lady. As the show's eponymous man-child host, creator and star Paul Reubens reinvented children's TV programming in the 1980s by melding the innocence of early TV shows like Howdy Doody with the surreal visual style of music videos. It was the rare kids show that encouraged creativity and individualism—and screaming (whenever the "secret word" was spoken). Over its five-season run (1987–91), the show collected 22 Emmy Awards, won the Television Critics Award for Outstanding Children's Program in 1987, and is ranked in the top ten of TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever.
