Description
Ostensibly subtitled "Trying, Trying, Trying, Trying, Trying" (though better known simply as "the Box") McSweeney's Issue No. 4 is, by their own admission, their best ever—the perfect marriage of form and content, crystallizing (in paper) the grandest possibilities of the McSweeney's project. Inside the Box you will find 14 separately bound books of varying length; shorter offerings by heavy hitters (Haruki Murakami, George Saunders, Rick Moody) are enriched by their status as beautiful objects. Conversely, newcomer Sheila Heti dignifies the lavish presentation of her "Middle Stories" by making a hefty impact, while other nonfiction, like Paul Malisewski's "Paperback Nabokov," helps establish McSweeney's as a home for first-rate essays. McSweeney's began in 1998 as a literary journal that published only works rejected by other magazines. That rule was soon abandoned, and since then McSweeney's has attracted work from some of the finest writers in the country—including Jonathan Franzen, William T. Vollmann, Rick Moody, Joyce Carol Oates, Jonathan Lethem, Michael Chabon, T.C. Boyle, Steven Millhauser, Stephen King, and Ann Beattie—and won a fistful of magazine and design awards. At the same time, the journal continues to be a major home for new and unpublished writers, and each issue is treated to its own unique presentation.
