Description
Before his death at 31, Franz Schubert (1797–1828) wrote more than 600 leider—German art songs for voice—and utterly transformed a modest genre into a vehicle of great emotional power. Schubert developed an unsurpassed ability to generate intense emotional power in the space of a few minutes, and was able to evoke anything from a young woman's turbulent sexual awakening in "Gretchen am Spinnrade" to a harrowing demonic menace in "Erlkönig." In this book Mark Ringer guides the reader through more than a hundred of Schubert's greatest lieder, 20 of which are also found on the enclosed audio CD, performed by such artists as Ruth Ziesak, Johannes Kalpers, and Hanno Müller-Brachmann.
