Description
When discussing how air power helped make the U.S. Navy so successful in World War II, few people think of blimps or rigid airships as part of that equation. Yet navy blimps were essential to antisubmarine combat in the Atlantic; collaborating with government-sponsored research institutions like the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC), navy airmen employed such newly devised systems as the magnetic airborne detector (MAD), microwave radar, Loran long-range navigation, radio sono-buoys, and pattern ordnance in their blimps. Illustrated with black and white photos throughout, this book analyzes the development of airships as weapons to detect and defeat German submarines and reveals the little-heralded (often secret) accomplishments of airship crews.
