Description
After George Washington declared that Indian lands could no longer be taken without the "free consent" of native peoples, the Cherokees' embrace of Anglo culture was rapid, marked by the first Indian newspaper, a written language, and a constitution modeled on the U.S. version. But when Andrew Jackson entered the White House in 1829, the ensuing land grab led to the Cherokees' forced removal and thousands of deaths along the Trail of Tears. Daniel Blake Smith describes the fierce battle over identity and patriotism within the Cherokee culture that followed. On one side stood the traditional Cherokees, deeply connected to their land; on the other were those who favored removal to Oklahoma as the only way to save the Cherokee Nation.
